Archeologists discover pre-Incan tomb in Peru

Lima: Peruvian archeologists on Thursday announced to have discovered an undisturbed pre-Incan tomb containing two wrapped corpses and dating to the year 1000 AD, media reported.
The tomb, uncovered at the Huaca Pucllana archeological site in Peru’s capital Lima, belonged to the Wari culture, holding the corpses of an adult and a child that have been wrapped in materials made of vegetable fibre, said state news agency Andina quoting archaeologists, Xinhua reported.
The tomb was discovered recently during the sixth stage of exploration work at the Great Pyramid of Huaca Pucllana, located in the city’s Miraflores residential district.
The two-meter-deep tomb dated from a time of much social turmoil and transformation, but had remained intact through cultures of later generations in the region, said the archeologists.
The tomb, which holds numerous offerings, is likely to contain the remains of members of the ruling elite, said the news agency Andina.
According to Isabel Flores, the lead archeologist for the exploration work, the child could be sacrificed in honor of the adult.
The Wari culture thrived in the region from 600 AD to 1000 AD, around 500 years before the rise of the Inca Empire, and some 70 other tombs of the same culture have been uncovered thus far at the Huaca Pucllana area. (IANS)

1-year jail term for ‘punching’ horse

London: A fan of Premier League side Newcastle United has reportedly been handed a year-long prison term for punching a police horse after a derby day match in April. Newcastle United supporter Barry Rogerson, who pleaded guilty to the charge of violent disorder, had attacked the animal after a football match between Newcastle and Sunderland on April 14.
According to the Daily Express, Rogerson was sentenced to 12 months in prison and was also handed a six-year footballing ban, with the judge reprimanding him that his actions, committed under the heavy influence of alcohol, could have caused grave injury to himself and the police officer sitting on the horse.
The report also said that from video footage, Rogerson is seen trying to fight the horse as police attempt to combat trouble between fans after the match.
Rogerson was one of seven men that pleaded guilty to violent disorder following the incident and all were jailed, the report added. (ANI)

21,000 mums attempt to break breast-feeding record

Tokyo: Thousands of lactating mothers simultaneously breast-fed their babies in the Philippines on Thursday, in an attempt to break a world record.
Being organized by the advocacy group, Breastfeeding Philippines, it was held around 1000 cities across the conservative and largely Catholic country, the Japan Times reported.
According to advocates, there remains a stigma in the country against women who breast-feed in public.
The group director, Nona Andaya-Castillo complained that public is okay when women bare their chest for sex in the movies or wear skimpy clothes but when a mother does the same to feed her child, it is referred to as gross.
The group aimed to break its own Guinness World record, which it had set in 2007 with 15,218 mothers breast-feeding simultaneously in multiple sites.
On Thursday, an estimated 21,000 mothers took part in the event, but it would still take the Guinness representatives up to three weeks to verify the final tally. (ANI)

Seven-planet solar system discovered

London: The discovery of a seventh planet around the dwarf star KIC 11442793 could be a record, as it may be one of the richest planetary systems yet.
According to two separate teams of researchers, the system bears some similarities to our own, but all seven planets orbit much closer to their host star, which lies some 2,500 light-years from Earth, the BBC reported.
The crowded solar system is described in two papers published on the pre-print server Arxiv.org.
One of the identifications was made by volunteers using the Planet Hunters website. The site was set up to allow volunteers to sift through the public data from Nasa’s Kepler space telescope – which was launched to search for so-called exoplanets – worlds orbiting distant stars. (ANI)
