BCCI to decide Pune Warriors’ future

Chennai: The fate of IPL franchise Pune Warriors, which has defaulted on its payments to the BCCI, will top the agenda when the Board’s all-powerful working committee meets here on Saturday. Owned by the Sahara Group, the Pune Warriors have been on collision course with the BCCI after the Board encashed its bank guarantee due to non-payment of the franchise fee. The Sahara group announced its pull-out from the IPL after that even though that is yet to be formally conveyed to the BCCI, which wants the team to furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 170.2 crore to remain part of the league next year. The BCCI, after reportedly reminding Sahara about the payment several time, is now planning to terminate it from the IPL. All the governing council members of the IPL have been invited for Saturday’s meeting and the BCCI is expected to issue a 30-day termination notice to Pune Warriors after consultations. (PTI)

Shiv Kapur battles 13th in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur: Shiv Kapur brought home three birdies against one bogey for a battling two-under-par 70 to move to five-under 211 and in tied 13th place at the halfway stage of the CIMB Classic here on Friday. The 31-year-old Indian is eight shots behind the leader, American Keegan Bradley. Gaganjeet Bhullar carded a 70 for tied 33rd place while Anirban Lahiri also shot a 70 for 42nd position. (PTI)

Jeev misses cut in Japan

Sodegaura (Japan): Jeev Milkha Singh struggled on his back nine with three bogeys and a double bogey to card a five-over 76 and miss the cut at the Bridgestone Open here on Friday. Jeev, who has been hit by injuries and has made just one cut since his withdrawal at the BMW PGA Championships in May, carded 74 and 76 and missed the cut by a big margin. Jeev started on the 10th and had two bogeys on the back nine and three more on the front stretch of the course with one double bogey. He also had two birdies but that could not save him. Meanwhile, the champion of past two years Toru Taniguchi (67-68) was joined by Daisuke Maruyama (68-67) and Korea’s Eun-shin Park (71-64) with eight players three shot behind them. (PTI)

Indian women’s team named for Asian Hockey Champions Trophy

New Delhi: Midfielder Ritu Rani will lead India’s 18-member senior women squad which will compete at the 3rd Asian Champions Trophy to be played at Kakamigahara, Japan from November 2-9, Hockey India said on Friday. The senior women team camp is currently underway and commenced at NSNIS, Patiala from October 11 as preparations for this tournament. Midfielder Chanchan Devi will be the vice-captain of the team will depart for Japan on October 29. The senior women team won the bronze rpt bronze medal at the 8th Women’s Asia Cup held in Malaysia last month. The other participating teams in the tournament are China, Japan and Malaysia. India will open its campaign against China on November 2 followed by matches against Malaysia on November 4 and Japan on November 7. List of players: Rajni Etimarpu, Savita, Deep Grace Ekka, Deepika, Kirandeep Kaur, Sunita Lakra, Sushila Chanu, Monika, Manjeet Kaur, Amandeep, Ritu Rani (Captain), Namita Toppo, Chanchan Devi (vice-captain), Soundarya Yendala, Vandana Katariya, Rani, Poonam Rani, Ritusha Arya. Rain forces draw in Dhaka

Dhaka: The second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand ended in a draw on Friday after rain washed out the fifth and final day’s play. The result ensured the two teams shared the spoils in the series after the first Test in Chittagong also ended in a draw. Bangladesh were 269-3 overnight in the second innings, leading New Zealand by 114 runs. Left-handed middle-order batsman Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 126 alongside former captain Shakib Al Hasan on 32 not out. The hosts made 289 in the first innings, followed by NZ’s 437. (AFP)
