Man behind 20 robberies caught
New Delhi: A 40-year-old man has been arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi police for his alleged involvement in over 20 cases of dacoity and theft. Iqbal alias Babu (40) was arrested on Friday evening near Murga Mandi at Ghazipur in East Delhi after the Anti-Robbery Cell of Crime Branch laid a trap for him on the basis of a tip-off. One pistol and four live cartridges were recovered from his possession, police said. “In a long list of crimes (by Iqbal), the latest was a daylight robbery at gunpoint of Rs 35 lakh from a businessman in April this year. “A year back, along with an aide, he had committed another robbery at gunpoint, of Rs 15 lakh in Noida,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Ravindra Yadav. Iqbal was involved in several sensational cases of robbery in northern India, particularly in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida, added Yadav. He was earlier arrested by Delhi police in 2006 but managed to escape from the custody of Punjab police a year later while being brought to the national capital to appear in a court. “After his escape, he was involved in several robberies and was declared a proclaimed offender. “A cash reward of Rs 50,000 had been announced for his arrest,” police said. MC&MC working round-the-clock
Bhopal: Equipped with modern equipment, the state-level media certification and monitoring committee (MC&MC) — formed before coming Madhya Pradesh assembly elections — is tracking coverage of poll-related activities of political parties and candidates on media round-the-clock. Official sources told UNI that the chief responsibility of MC&MC includes monitoring of advertisements and news as well as poll code violation-related news besides media reports that could affect law and order situation. More than four dozen staff along with about one-and-half dozen computer terminals have been allocated to monitor media reports at the MC&MC office set up at the state’s Chief Electoral Officer’s office. In view of recent directives by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the MC&MC would also monitor poll-related activities on social media henceforth. For the purpose, a special software prepared by a Pune-based company would be used. Media reports are monitored focussing on about 20 points, including frequent airing of a political statement by some leader that is expected to aid his party. (UNI)
Married Delhi woman gang raped in moving car
Ghaziabad: A 25-year-old married woman from Delhi was allegedly gang raped in a moving car by four youths, including two sons of her landlord, in Sahibabad area here. The incident took place late last night, police said. After sexually assaulting her, the four accused abandoned the woman at a secluded place and fled, they said. Based on her complaint, a case of rape has been registered. The woman, who lives in Nand Nagri area of Delhi, told in her complaint that she had come alone to offer prayers at a ‘dargah’ (shrine) in Artala area on Friday. She alleged that her landlord’s son Hemant and Lala, along with two others were following her. After finding her alone when she was returning, they dragged her in their car and raped her, before abandoning here near Hindon river, a senior police officer said. They also threatened her not to reveal the matter to anyone. Her medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited, the officer said, adding that a manhunt is on to arrest the four accused. (PTI)
Con woman held in cheating case
Kalpetta, Kerala: A con woman was taken into custody for allegedly duping people of million of rupees, in hilly Wayanad district of Kerala on Saturday. Police said Kavitha Pillai, who has been accused of duping students of crores of rupees promising seats in self-financing medical colleges in the State, from Thirunelli on Saturday morning. A Thiruvananthapuram court had earlier rejected her bail plea filed following a complaint from a victim. The police had also issued look out notice for her. A case was registered against Pillai, hailing from Alappuzha, who runs KGK Group of Consultancy at Karikkamuri in Ernakualm city, for duping as much as 60 million rupees promising seats in self-financing medical colleges in the state.
