20 juvenile thieves arrested
Guwahati: As many as 20 juvenile thieves were arrested from different parts of Assam’s main city Guwahati in overnight raids by the police on Saturday. Various stolen items, including a large number of bicycles and gold ornaments, were recovered from the apprehended children. However, the mastermind of the gang, one Sunny, managed to give police a slip. Police said 16 underage thieves were apprehended under Dispur police station area since last night. Several bicycles, scooters and gold ornaments were recovered from them. Four more juvenile thieves were arrested, along with others, under Udalbakra police station area of the city last night. Similar items were recovered from them. Police said the modus operandi of the thieves’ gang was to engage the kids in marking the houses where the residents were away or remained out on fixed hours. The gangs operated on the information collected by the children, who were also part of the thefts. (UNI)
New amenities inaugurated at Guwahati railway station
Guwahati: Enhanced passenger amenities were inaugurated at the Guwahati Railway Station here by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) general manager RS Virdi on Friday. As part of the major remodeling exercise undertaken for giving the station a modern look, the General Manager inaugurated a vintage steam engine which has been placed on a pedestal in front of the station and which will showcase the heritage of the Indian Railways. The YG class engine no 4119 was built in the year 1956 and was based at Badarpur. It has been renovated for display at the Guwahati Coaching Depot. Two water fountains have also been added in front of the station to give it a better ambiance. Enhanced parking area for vehicles has been provided and separate parking slots earmarked for rickshaws, autos, taxis and army vehicles. The layout has been designed in a manner so that conflicting cross movements of passengers as well as vehicles are avoided. An electronic display board which will scroll the reservation charts was also inaugurated. In order to prevent congestion in the platforms on account of passengers waiting for trains, a new spacious waiting hall with adequate toilets and with a total floor area of 475 sq m has been constructed at the Kamakhya end of the platform no-1 for the general class passengers. A second entry from the Paltanbazar side to the Guwahati railway station is also coming up for easy movement of passengers. (UNI)
Nagaland Governor calls for eradicating corruption
Kohima: Manipur and Nagaland Governor Ashwani Kumar and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio have requested all sections of society, especially the public servants, to help in eradicating corruption. Dr Kumar in a message ahead of the forthcoming Vigilance Awareness Week (October 28 to November 3) to be observed under the theme ‘Promoting Good Governance – Positive Contribution of Vigilance stated, “We all need to respect the rule of law.” Dr Kumar said that improvement in governance requires eliminating corruption, increase of transparency in public procurement and enforcing accountability. In a separate message, Rio, also appealed to all citizens concerned to contribute their best in the fight against corruption. (UNI)
