SHILLONG: The West Garo Hills district administration is awaiting the internal inquiry report from the district police on the escape under trail prisoner (UTP) Abdul Kalam Azad from Phulbari CHC.

Azad escaped from Phulbari CHC where he was taken for a regular medical check-up on Friday night.

“The district administration is expecting the report in the next few days,” WGH Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said.

Azad, who hails from New Bhaitbari, was arrested from his alleged involvement in the murder of a 70-year-old man Ram Chandra Thakur.

Azad managed to give police a slip when the on-duty constable Ajay Chettri went to speak to the nurse on the former’s ailment, sources said.

When asked why the police had sent only one constable to escort the accused to the health centre, Hakshi cited shortage of man-power in the district as the reason.

Meanwhile, the District Police chief Mukesh Singh has said that an internal inquiry was underway. “It is being headed by the SDPO,” he said adding that actions would be taken against the police constable (Chettri) for dereliction of duty.
