SHILLONG: Residents of Greater Laban continue to suffer from acute water crisis and pathetic road conditions while civic authorities continue to ignore their plight.

It has been found that residents of Bishnupur area are sourcing water from a tank located in the interior lanes whereas residents of Harisabha, Howell Road, Dunoon Compound and Oxford Hill Road, to name a few, have been resorting to alternate means to procure their daily quota of water.

With advanced winter conditions setting in, these residents are now hit by an advanced water crisis that is otherwise associated largely with the winter months.

A deficient monsoon has also added to the problems of the residents of Greater Laban. In areas like Dunoon Compound and Oxford Hill Road, residents who have borewell facilities within their premises, are seen helping their neighbours as a number of lanes in these two localities adorn interlaced drawn pipes from one house to the other. In the locked community water tank at a Bishnupur lane, residents use electric wire cases to drain out seeping water from water-pipes and the tank.

The growing water crisis is also having its affects in Howell Road and its adjoining areas.

Another problem that is plaguing the people of this oldest village is the dilapidated condition of the roads. A recent meeting convened by local legislator Sanbor Shullai with the line departments is yet to have the desired effect since the road condition has remained the same.

The road from Circuit House junction to Assamese Namghar, St John’s Church and AB Road is crying out for immediate repair.

It may be reminded that the PWD department recently repaired the roads at Rilbong Zigzag, Polo and other areas during the visit of the President to the city, but the roads in other areas have remained neglected.
