SHILLONG: The pro-ILP pressure groups have urged the state MLAs to rise above their party affiliations to speak in favour for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the State.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, KSU vice president Frederick Kharmawphlang said people send their representatives to Assembly to implement the laws which would preserve and protect their interest.

“It is not right to be puppet in the hand of someone. You have been elected to be able to make your own decision,” Kharmawphlang said while making it clear that they were demanding implementation of ILP “because it suits the present situation”.

“We are not asking to implement the act which was formulated in 1873. We want a modified ILP,” he said.

Quoting Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma that the ILP has failed to curb illegal migration in the other states of the region, Kharmawphlang said the State government should not be adamant but implement an ILP which is suitable for the state.

“It is because of this reason that we are demanding for a new ILP,” he said.
