SHILLONG: The State Government has been ineffectual in recognizing and lauding an act of valour by a young hero Lamphrang Kharmawphlang when he saved one Ezakiel Sangma from drowning at Umbah River in Umpling ten years ago.

It was on June 2003, when Kharmawphlang (then 14 years), jumped into the river to save Sangma (then 11 years) from drowning when the current of the river carried him to a much deeper level of the river.

However, till date, no kind of award of recognition was given to Kharmawphlang for his heroic act. Kharmawphlang is the son of and resident of Umpling Dongumbah.

“It was because I could not just stand there and watch little Sangma (unknown to him then) drowning,” Kharmawphlang said adding “I still remember his cry for help and I thank God for giving me the strength to overcome all fear when I jumped into the water to save his life. I felt great and will do the same even now.’
