Night road blockade

SHILLONG: The three-night road blockade called by thirteen pro-ILP groups passed off peacefully expect a single incident in which unknown miscreants attempted to burn down a house belonging to one Bol Bahadur Chettri at Mawlai Mawiong Rim in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to police, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the backyard of Chettri’s house. The fire damaged the house partially.

Apart from this incident, the night road blockade did not witness any violent incidents.

The vehicles were off the road immediately after 7 pm and shop owners preferred to keep their shutters down immediately after the commencement of the blockade.

The blockade also resulted in huge traffic jams in the city during the day time on all the three days as people were in rush to reach to their respective destinations well before the scheduled time of the road blockade.

Arson attempt in Tura market: Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants tried to set ablaze a shop in the heart of Tura’s Nakham Bazar late Wednesday night without much success. According to police, some miscreants reportedly threw petrol onto the shop and ignited it before fleeing shortly after around 11pm. The grocery shop belonged to one Rakhal Roy. Before the fire could spread alert neighbours raised the alarm and helped in dousing the flame. The front door of the shop was partially damaged in the incident. The incident took place on the second night of the road blockade called by pro-ILP groups. (With input from our Tura correspondent)
