Prince to visit Kochi from Nov 11
Kochi: Royal couple Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles will be on a four-day visit to Kochi from November 11 during their India tour. Police are making elaborate arrangements for the security of the Royal couple. Charles and Camilla will arrive in Kochi on November 11 and would visit the Kerala Folklore Museum and Theatre. They would be taken on a tour of the museum, where a demonstration of traditional dance art forms of the state, including Kathakali, would be performed. The Prince of Wales would join urban planners and city dignitaries to view the signing of a MOU marking the participation of Kochi in the ‘Future Cities project.’ Later, the Royal couple will attend a reception for civic and business leaders hosted by Kerala Governor. On November 12, the Prince of Wales will view at first hand an ‘elephant corridor’ at Vazhachal forest range in neighbouring Thrissur district and see the measures being taken to help elephant conservation. He would discuss animal and forestry conservation at the Vazhachal Inspection Bungalow after meeting members of the local community and WWF outreach workers. The Royal couple would visit the Jewish Synagogue and meet members of the community and receive a traditional Jewish prayer of blessing.They would also be taken to the Mattancherry Palace Museum on November 14. SC allows Subrata Roy to go abroad
New Delhi: Supreme Court Friday permitted Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy and his two directors to travel abroad till Nov 11 by which time they have to submit original title deeds of their assets worth Rs.20,000 crore to cover the investors’ money they had collected through OFCD. The apex court bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice J.S. Kehar modified an earlier order following a hearing on Sahara’s application in their chamber. This was stated to newspersons by Sahara counsel C.A. Sundaram soon after he emerged from the chamber after the hearing of the matter. (IANS)
Major fire at 180-year-old government printing press
Chennai: A major fire broke out in the over 180-year-old Tamil Nadu government printing press here early Friday causing extensive damage to it. However, there were no casualties, official sources said. More than 10 fire tenders were pressed into service and doused the fire after several hours, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department sources said. A major portion of the building at Mint Street in North Chennai collapsed due to the fire. Though short-circuit is suspected to be the reason for the fire, an investigation would be conducted to ascertain the real cause, they said. According to the state government website, the Stationery and Printing department undertakes all printing works of the government departments and organisations. The department is considered as vital for the operations of all government offices, communications and maintenance of records. It was established on 17th December, 1831. (PTI)
More than one kg of gold seized from air passenger
Kozhikode: Air Customs Intelligence officials seized 1.150 kg of gold valued at Rs 35 lakh from a passenger who arrived by a Sharjah-Calicut Air India flight at the nearby Karippur International airport early Friday. The passenger, identified as Mohammed Musthafa hailing from Kasargod district in Kerala, was taken into custody for questioning, Air Customs officials said. The gold was hidden in the wheel chair brought by him, they said. (PTI)
Man killed in clash, five others injured
Etah: A man was killed and five others were injured when a clash broke out in Sirsa Tappu village under Mirchahi police station area here on Friday morning. Rival factions pelted stones and opened fire following a row over a disputed pathway in the village killing Gyanesh (22) on the spot, police sources said. Five others of both the factions were injured in the incident and were admitted to a hospital. Meanwhile infuriated over the incident, the locals placed the body on the Etah-Bareilly road and resorted to traffic jam for over five hours. It was only after senior officials reached the spot and pacified the protestors that the road was cleared, sources added. A case has been registered and investigations are on , sources added. (PTI)
Husband, two others get life term for killing wife
Ballia (UP): A local court here has awarded life imprisonment to three persons, including the husband of the victim woman in a three-year-old murder case. Additional Sessions Judge Brijendra Singh om Thursrday awarded life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Pushpa in Avaya village under Ubhaon police station area on May 18, 2010. According to prosecution, the woman’s husband Avdhesh, his paramour Durga Vijay and a man Kapildev had set ablaze Puspha while she was sleeping in the house. On the basis of Puspha’s dying declaration, police had filed a charge sheet against the three, sources added. (PTI)
