Leh records season’s lowest temperature

Srinagar: Leh recorded the season’s lowest night temperature at minus 7.4 degrees Celsius, a Met Department official said. The mercury dropped five notches in Ladakh region’s Leh town from the previous night’s minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, he said. The minimum temperature in neighbouring town of Kargil settled at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, a slight drop from the previous temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, the official said. The state’s summer capital, Srinagar, also registered a drop in night temperatures with the minimum of 1.7 degrees Celsius, compared to Saturday’s 2.8 degrees celsius, he said. He said the minimum temperature in the south Kashmir tourist resort of Pahalgam went below freezing point to settle at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius. Although the night temperature in the ski-resort of Gulmarg was also below freezing point at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, it registered a rise of two notches from the previous minimum temperature of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, the official said. He said other places in the valley like Qazigund, Kokernag and Kupwara recorded drop of one to two notches in the night temperatures but the minimum temperature settled above the freezing point. The weather department has forecast a fresh western disturbance that is likely to affect the state from November 5, adding the weather would remain dry and pleasant till then. (PTI)

Woman commits suicide

Bhadoi (UP): A woman allegedly committed suicide when she was denied permission by her in-laws to go to her parental house for Diwali in Suryawan area, police said on Sunday. Anita (21) hanged herself in Shukulpur village last evening, they said adding that the body has been sent for post mortem. Anita’s parents have filed a dowry harassment case against her in-laws. (PTI)
Two boys crushed to death by train
Ghaziabad (UP): Two class five students were killed when they were hit by a speeding train in Modinagar area. The mishap occurred on Saturday night when the boys identified as Aakash and his friend Sachin, both 12 years old, went out to answer call of the nature, police said on Sunday. The two boys, residents of Sudamapuri Colony of Modinagar area, had gone near the railway track. “Eyewitnesses told police that the they were crushed to death by Shalimar Express train, which was going to Meerut from Delhi,” said a senior police officer. The bodies have been sent for postmortem. (PTI)

Over 200 held for bursting prohibited sound crackers

Kolkata: Over 200 people were arrested from various parts of the city on Kali puja night for bursting prohibited sound crackers and indulging in unruly behaviour. They were arrested in night-long operations for bursting prohibited sound crackers Saturday night like chocolate bombs and other fire crackers which exceed the sound limit fixed by the authorities, Kolkata Police said. The sound limit was fixed keeping in mind the problem it posed for the old, ailing and the children. Police have seized huge amount of fireworks during drives in the last one week to contain the use of illegal sound crackers. Besides opening special control rooms, both the state and city police also maintained a strict vigil to avert any untoward incident during the celebrations. (PTI)

Slight intensity quake off Andaman

Port Blair: An earthquake of slight intensity today hit an area off the east coast of Little Andaman, but there was no immediate report of any damage or casualty. The quake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter Scale, took place at 12:24 hours, an India Meteorological Department report said. Officials said the epicentre of the tremor was latitude 10.6 degree north and longitude 92.8 degree east with a focal depth of 30 km. (PTI)
