Unjustified allegations

Editor,
Much has been written about the case of circumcision of children at North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute for Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS). The children are from Meherban Orphanage which as the name suggests is run by a Muslim organisation. What is not understood is why the blame should fall on one person – Dr Yunus the surgeon who performed the procedure. If these children are from an Orphanage some authority must have been in charge of sending them to NEIGRIHMS. Who are these persons? Why have they not been held accountable? The doctor concerned must have acted on someone’s orders. All the legal formalities must have been completed by the concerned party/parties (in charge of the orphanage) before the children were brought to NEIGRIHMS from where the role of the medical team conducting the procedure begins. If the circumcision is forced then why was an FIR not lodged by the officials in charge of the Orphanage? In any case one fails to see reason behind the hue and cry regarding the circumcision. After all it was not a botched up amputation. Should the doctor who has been sincerely manning the Emergency section of NEIGRIHMS for several years be blamed for this? Incidentally, the same doctor was instrumental in saving the life of an accident victim by removing the rod from his chest. The reputation of a doctor is a delicate subject. It is unfair to tarnish it without justifiable reasons.
On a lighter note – religion or otherwise- the circumcised children have at least gone back with a health benefit as modern science suggests.

When ingrates speak!

Editor,
I was quite amused to read a news report appearing in your paper on the concern shown by one gentleman calling himself Juda, on the show of strength by Meghalaya Police just before the Durga Puja festival. He perhaps wants Police to watch silently as people roast. The gentleman calls himself the President of Shiliang Umkhen and runs an NGO which operates the government maxi cabs so commonly seen in Shillong city. He reminds us of a Biblical character with one alphabet gone missing. Well he eats from the same plate where he also spits and after operating all these fleet of taxis, he gives a return of Rs. 300.00 to Government. To top of it all, this work was allotted to him perhaps because of his good looks and not through a tendering process. Half the time he is in the corridors of power and the other half he foments venom against the programmes of Government. What hypocrisy! If Government of Meghalaya has self respect they should immediately have him thrown out of the government taxi operations and make him repay government dues as per agreement. If there is no agreement, then Government officials who are responsible for handing over in a platter such government assets to individuals and organizations that are totally anti-government, should be held accountable and action taken against them.
Yours etc.,
B. Mawlong,
