SHILLONG: The UDP has decided to oppose the ongoing enrolment drive of dubious residents into the electoral rolls of the State.

“It is unprecedented that such things have taken place in Madanriting,” UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said while taking to newsmen on Wednesday.

He said that the party would go all out to protest such attempts on the part of the authorities to enroll the dubious people into the electoral rolls.

“We are also opposing the enrollment of the army personnel into the electoral rolls. We must understand that these army personnel come to work in the State for a brief period. Therefore, they cannot be considered as permanent residents of the State,” Lyngdoh said.

Earlier, Nongthymmai MDC Latiplang Kharkongor has questioned the enrollment process of the army personnel into the electoral rolls of the State.

The Nongthymmai MDC has raised this question after he found out that a large number of army personnel had tried to register their names in the electoral rolls during the hearing held at Madanriting on Tuesday.

Perturbed by this development, Kharkongor even led a delegation of the Executive of the Madanriting Dorbar Shnong to meet the Additional District Magistrate, DM Wahlang to voice their opposition over the enrollment of the army personnel.
