Movement on to support Iron Sharmila’s campaign

mphal: Various organisations have started campaign to support campaign of Irom Sharmila which completed 13 years on November 4.

After personnel of 8 Assam Rifles shot dead ten people who were waiting for a bus at Malom in 2000, Sharmila began her epic fast demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 which gives sweeping power to the military to kill people on mere suspicion.

According to Just Peace Foundation (JPF) which is spearheading the movement to save and support Sharmila has been launched throughout the country. Discussions, sit-in protest, functions were held in many Universities of the countries. Sharmila Kanba Lup (Save Sharmila Organisation) on Thursday also organised an event as part of the campaign.

Amnesty International has launched a and appealed to all to give a missed call to telephone number 18002000059 to support Sharmila and demand for repeal of AFSPA.

Sharmila continues to be detained at security wards of JNIMS hospital.

The National Human Rights Commission which recently met her at the hospital chastised the state government for denying people and even representatives of various national and international human bodies to meet her. (UNI)
