SHILLONG: A sector level meeting of the Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be held on Sunday at Bagli international border to ensure better co-ordination between the two forces to contain insurgents sneaking into Meghalaya.
The meeting comes in the wake of Friday’s incident where suspected ANVC-B militants sneaked into the border from Bangladesh and shot dead two BSF constables in South West Garo Hills.
“The meeting scheduled for Sunday is aimed at having better co-operation to avoid such kinds of incidents in future,” BSF spokesperson Mahendra Singh informed. F-BGB meet…
(Contd from P-1) There were also decisions in the past to have joint patrolling by both BSF and BGB.
Both the forces will meet at Bagli in South West Khasi Hills to discuss better strategy in wake of killing of the two BSF personnel. Unlike in the past, there is good relation between the border guarding forces of India and Bangladesh at present.
According to sources, due to the unrest in Bangladesh including hartals, the BGB personnel are preoccupied with maintaining law and order in the neighbouring country and adding to the problem is the limited manpower strength of the BGB which results in militants taking advantage of the situation.
Though the motive behind the attack on BSF men by the ANVC-B militants is not known, indications are that it was aimed at terrorizing security personnel to have free access to Bangladesh.
Moreover, seven companies of BSF forces are deployed in Meghalaya especially in Garo Hills for anti insurgency operations which is disliked by various militant groups.
Recently the ANVC-B had issued a statement to the media that they will engage in coal trade across the border and urged the security forces not to stand on their way.
The attack on the BSF constables has shocked the BSF higher ups as there was not an incident of casualty to BSF personnel in militancy related incident in Meghalaya in the recent past.
A team comprising of senior officials of Meghalaya police and BSF have also gone to the area to conduct an inspection and to review the security arrangement.
