TURA: In view of the government’s failure to fulfill its long pending demands the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), South Zone (SZ), Baghmara has once again submitted its charter of demands to Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma which was earlier submitted in November last year and then again in August this year with the government yet to give any kind of response to it.

The demands of the GSU included the immediate provision of necessary medical equipments and specialist doctors in Baghmara Civil Hospital in accordance with its up-gradation from CHC to a Civil Hospital.

It stated that the said hospital was functioning in the same manner as before in the absence of Specialist Doctors and medical equipments compelling people to travel to Tura, Guwahati or Shillong for their treatment at huge expenses.

Its other demand is the up-gradation of the MeECL Sub-Division into a Division as well as the provision of a Tower Line for the entire district of South Garo Hills.

It pointed out that due to the shortage of office staff and vehicles in the sub-divisional provisions maintenance of power lines in the district was not being done properly resulting in regular power cuts which was greatly inconveniencing the people of the region.

In addition the union is demanding the immediate improvement of NH-62, the proper functioning of the Baghmara Industrial Training Institute (ITI), the immediate setting up of Taxation Office in Baghmara as well as the construction of a District Auditorium in the interest of the general populace of the region.

The union warned that it would be compelled to resort to agitations if its demands were not met.
