SHILLONG: In every other city there are designated areas for every activity. There are commercial areas, industrial areas, market areas etc. Elsewhere highly inflammable matter is not allowed in residential areas.
Surprisingly in a very quiet residential area of Lower Nongrim Hills very close to the residence of the State Minister Prestone Tynsong, a petrol pump is about to be opened.
Several attempts to contact the Rangbah Shnong, Nongrim Hills James Lyngwa failed as he would not pick up his mobile phone.
Residents of the area are also surprised that a petrol pump with its attendant dangers could be set up in a rather compact residential area.
Residents said what is more dangerous is the presence of a paint godown just behind the petrol pump.
When asked why they did not protest the setting up of a petrol pump in a residential area they said they had no voice as it is the Dorbar Shnong which gives permission for setting up such units.
They also said that if vehicles were to fill petrol on that narrow lane there would be complete traffic chaos in the area.
