HILLONG: Getting inspiration from Late Kambel Shullai, the inventor of the eco-friendly crematorium (Ka Khnap Thangbru in Pnar dialect ), the State Government has decided to set up 10 such crematoriums for the indigenous people, who are non-Christians in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

The Community and Rural Development Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that Government would send a proposal to the 13th Finance Commission to provide funds to set up eco friendly crematoriums at the cost of Rs 30 lakh each. These crematoriums will benefit the poor people of the State.

The eco-friendly crematorium constructed by Shullai from Jowai was popular in Janitia Hills and for this, he received several awards. His model was replicated in parts of Jaintia Hills supported by Sein Raij.

The crematorium is a high structure, open at one end and connected to a 36- feet high chimney at the other end. The cover of the chimney can be operated from outside for regulating flames.

The construction of eco- friendly crematoriums will be a fitting tribute to Shullai who passed away in June last year.

“With the support of Sein Raij we are planning to construct 10 crematoriums based on the model and design created by Kambel Shullai”, Tynsong said.

He said eco friendly crematorium requires less firewood and moreover there would not be any environmental pollution.

According to him, there were times when the poor people were not able to accord a proper burial to the departed and hence the crematorium to be managed by the Community would be of great help to the poor and the needy.

Earlier in September this year, Tynsong inaugurated an eco-friendly crematorium at Shangpung-Khliehrangnah, which was set up without any financial assistance from Government.

The crematorium was constructed by the Sein Raij Khliehrangnah based on the model of late Shullai and funded by the Dorbar Shnong of Shangpung- Khliehrangnah.
