Nagaland observes National Press Day

mentary Secretary for Information and Public Relation Kropol Vitsu on Saturday said the media has great role to bring changes in the society and the society is very much influenced by the role of Media, as it is the watchdog for the public for their interest and benefits.

Speaking as the Chief Guest of the function to commemorate the National Press Day in cooperation of Information and Public Relation Department and Kohima Press Club at Press Club Conference Hall of Kohima Press Club Kropol said media not only a watchdog of three other estates of democracy, but it also a bridge between the Governing bodies and public, which is also a powerful tool that influences the public to a great extent; voice of the voiceless and a great force in building nation.

Kropol also admitted the difficulties faced by the media, especially in Nagaland due to insurgency and various reason, but expressed satisfaction that the media has evolved tremendously over the years despite of of heavy hindrances and its outcome can be clearly observed in the way it has shaped opinion of the people in a number of ways.

Giving the Speech on the theme ‘Role of Media in serving public interest’ the Editor of the Dimapur based English daily The Eastern Mirror, Bano Haralu said there was a sea change in the media in the entire world.

She said that when Television had come, the printing media was afraid of its status, but TV did not made any impact to the print media and more newspapers are still coming out. She also appreciated the media in Nagaland where the reporters are working boldly, albeit under tremendous pressure from insurgency and several other various pressure.

Bano said Nagaland got statehood 50 years ago, however, media was only 20 years old, but some of the neighbouring media was celebrating centennial anniversary.

However, media in Nagaland is growing in a vast way to serve the interest of the people. She also opined that there must be strong vernacular dailies in all dialect of Nagaland so that the media can provide advanced knowledge to the downtrodden remote dwellers of the state. (UNI)
