Indira Gandhi Zoological Park receives two giraffes

Visakhapatnam: The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) has received two giraffes from the Malaysia’s Negara Zoo.  According to IGZP Curator G Ramalingam, the two giraffes- a male and a female- arrived in the zoo last evening from Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad, where they had been housed for the last one month.  While the male giraffe was aged two years and was about 11 feet tall, the female giraffe was around eight feet tall and one-year-old, he said. Mr Ramalingam said the two giraffes were transported in a truck with two containers and were accompanied by a veterinarian during the journey from Hyderabad. The giraffes left Hyderabad at around 1700 hrs on Thursday evening and reached here yesterday. “We have transferred the animals to the night crawl and will observe them for the next two to three days after which we will allow them for public viewing by November 20,” he said. He said the giraffes were fed fruits such as bananas, apples and vegetables along with papal and banyan leaves. “We stopped for about five hours during the journey to provide rest to the giraffes,” the zoo curator said, adding water and food were kept in separate tubs during the journey from Hyderabad. 12 held for violence during Moharram

Gonda: Police on Saturday said they have arrested 12 people in connection with yesterday’s arsoning and clash between two groups over Moharram procession’s route in Katra Bazaar area of the Uttar Pradesh district. Superintendent of Police R P S Yadav said 12 people have so far been nailed, following raids in connection with the violent incident. A number of weapons were recovered from the hooligans. Police in posse has been deployed on the spot for peace. On Friday, two groups had indulged in a clash and arsoning, following disagreement over route during Moharram procession here.  (UNI)

Fake certficate racket busted, 2 held

Hyderabad: Gandhinagar Police in the city on Saturday busted a fake certificate racket with the arrest of two persons. Fake certificates of various universities in the country, laptop, printer, scanner and rubber stamps were seized from the possession of the accused – Srinivas , hailing from Warangala district and Yadagiri, who hailed from Nalgonda district, according to police. The duo, who earlier incurred losses in share market business, started making fake educational certificates and selling each certificate for Rs 6,000 to 10,000. So far, the accused had sold 400 fake certificates of different universities, police added. (UNI)

SC members join BJP in Jammu

Jammu: Over a dozen people representing Scheduled Caste category joined the Bharatiya Janata Party here on Saturday. “Impressed by the pro-nation, pro-people and pro-Dalit ideology of the party, dozens of people belonging to Schedule Caste community this morning joined BJP,” said state president Jugal Kishore. He also said, “Congress has always misled the Dalits for vote bank politics and never had any sincere concern for their welfare. The Dalits always voted Congress into power but unfortunately their plight still remains unheard as it was six decades ago.”  The BJP president said the party has been working towards implementation of the welfare schemes for weaker and down trodden sections in letter and spirit adding, “The state where BJP is in power, we have launched a number of schemes and the results have been very positive as the respective governments have implemented them with commitment.” (UNI)

World famous ‘Sonepur mela’ begins

Sonepur: The globally renowned, month-long ‘Sonepur mela’ at which elephants, horses and cattle are sold and purchased began on Saturday on the bank of the river Ganga in Bihar’s Saran district. With traditional sports like horse racing and dog show part of the fair, this year para-gliding is an added attraction, the organisers said. The fair organised by the Tourism department is also known for its theatre and folk dances. More than 600 theatre artistes from Kolkata, Varanasi, Delhi and Assam have arrived here, the organisers said. Stalls selling electronic goods and gadgets have come up at the fair which was inaugurated by Revenue minister Ramai Ram. The fair originates from the times when Emperor Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses from across the Ganga. With the state witnessing serial blasts in Patna and earlier in Bodh Gaya, strict security arrangements have been made. Saran District Magistrate Kundan Kumar said 20 temporary police stations have been opened for the fair. Policemen have been equipped with hand metal detectors to frisk visitors at the fair. (PTI)
