One killed by elephant in

Udalguri district

Udalguri: One person was trampled to death by an elephant which got isolated from its herd that destroyed some houses and standing crop in Udalguri district of Assam early Saturday morning, the police said. The person identified as Fagu Munda (55) was guarding his paddy field from elephant menace and had come down from his ‘machan’atop a tree at Bamunjuli village, to light firewood to keep warm, the police said. The pachyderm then dragged Munda with its truck and then trampled him to death, they said. The herd of wild elephants had come out of Bornadi Wildlife Santuary situated on the foothills of the Himalayas bordering Bhutan. After creating havoc in the area destroying some thatched houses and rice fields at Bamunjuli, the herd went back to the forest leaving behind one of them, the police said. (PTI)

Dimapur police recovers arms, gelatin in separate cases

Kohima: Dimapur police recovered explosives and firearms in two separate incidents on November 13 and 14. The seized weapons included one rusted sten carbine, gelatin and one .22 caliber pistol with five rounds live cartridges. According to sources , the sten carbine and gelatin were found in the residence of a seventy year-old woman, who was earlier arrested by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Women Cell personnel on November 12 for involvement in a weapons smuggling racket. Sources also said the firearm and explosives were found hidden in the residence of the woman identified only as ‘Mrs. Mary’ on the evening of November 13 at Chumukedima. Cash amounting to Rs. 19,000 was found in the residence and seized, police said. In another incident , one Povi Zhimomi was arrested by the Special Operations Team of Dimapur police for possessing a country-make .22 caliber pistol. The man was arrested from the bus stand at Golaghat Road area of Dimapur. Five rounds of .22 ammunition were also in his possession, police said. (UNI)

Adequate stock of iodised salt in state: Nagaland govt

Kohima: Setting at rest the rumours about acute shortage of salt in Nagaland, the Director of Food and Civil Supplies, Sedevikho Khro said there is enough stock of iodised salt in the state. A press release issued by Khro on Saturday said, following reports of rumours of acute shortage of iodised salt, the officials of Food and Civil Supplies department along with the district administration and the police, conducted physical verification in the godowns of the stockist yesterday and found there was sufficient stock of salt. He also informed a total of 94,000 kgs of Everyday/Prime I/O Plus brand salt have been distributed among the wholesalers of Dimapur and added, there was still balance of 5 lakh kgs of these brands of iodised salt lying in the godown of the distributors.
