Appeal to check highway jam

SHILLONG: The Dawki Border Area Joint Action Committee has expressed concern over the frequent traffic jam occurring along the narrow NH 40E and NH 40 which is a strategic thoroughfare for traders of both India and Bangladesh.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, chairman of the committee, Eraldus Lamin, said that the highway is filled by coal-laden trucks and limestone loaded trucks which transport goods to Bangladesh through the Dawki Land Customs Station and narrowness of the road has compounded the problem leading to heavy traffic jams along the highway causing severe inconvenience to all.

“We urge the authorities to impose No Entry for trucks passing through the Dawki-Tamabil Land Port without acquiring car pass from the Customs Office and to release the trucks on a timely basis,” Lamin said.

He also impressed on the need to keep a check on overtaking, illegal and double parking to prevent traffic. He also appealed to the government to consider widening of these strategic roads.
