Court extends Kharbuli’s police remand
SHILLONG: A city court on Wednesday extended the police custody of Anthony Kharbuli, who arrested on Tuesday for instigating the crowd during a meeting called by CSWO on September 25, for seven more days.
Kharbuli (48) was arrested from Spring Side in the city for instigating the crowd during a meeting called by CSWO. Later, a procession was taken out at Motphran.
It may be mentioned that six police personnel including five women cops were injured when members of the Khasi Women Welfare and Development Association (KWWDA) and the CSWO pelted stones on the on-duty police personnel during the procession at Motphran.Meanwhile, KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum has clarified that Kharbuli is not an active member of the party.
“He (Anthony) has been taking part in the various activities of the party since he is also concerned about the well being of the local people,” Nongrum said in a statement here on Wednesday.
The KHNAM leader also condemned the arrest Kharbuli.
KSU vice-president Frederick Kharmawphlang, while condemning the arrest of Kharbuli, said his organization was not going to tolerate this dictatorial attitude of Government.
“In a democratic set up, he (Anthony) had every right to speak in the public meeting at Student Field, Jaiaw called by the CSWO,” Kharmawphlang said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, condemning the use of force by the overnment at Umasawli, Shillong Mihngi Circle publicity secretary George M Kharwanniang sought clarification on who would compensate the affected families.
He also questioned the random arrest of the pressure group leaders by the police.
