TURA: A senior Assam government official has been abducted by suspected Garo militants from the Assam-Meghalaya border in Tikrikilla region on Wednesday evening. The BDO of Fakirganj Block in Dhubri district, Rashidul Islam, was heading for his home in Lakhipur town of Goalpara district when as many as five heavily armed militants stopped his government vehicle at 8 pm and took him away at gunpoint from the Assam side of the border.

Security forces have launched a large operation in the area to rescue the official and police strongly feel the involvement of the Garo outfit United Achik Liberation Army (UALA) which has been active on the Assam side of the border ever since elections to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council were announced.
