TURA: Olympic and world boxing champion MC Mary Kom has showered laurels on the sporting ability of the youth of Meghalaya and mentioned a special acknowledgment for Shillong Lajong Football Club which has become a part of the national football league in the country.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on the sidelines of the 8th Tura MP Cup finals at Dakopgre stadium on Saturday, the legendary boxer and Olympics Bronze medallist encouraged the youth of the State to take up sporting events in a big way to boost the State’s youth force and cited the example of Lajong as a positive attitude for the young citizens.

“The level of talent in the North East is high. Meghalaya is famous for its music and cultural heritage. It is a matter of pride to have a renowned football club like Lajong. I would like to encourage the youth to take up sports as a part of life,” said Mary Kom in her interaction with The Shillong Times.

The Olympics champion appealed to parents to encourage and allow their children to pursue sporting events because sports is also a good career option that not only pays monetarily but also keeps one physically and mentally fit which are prerequisites for a fulfilling life.

“I had faced major challenges in life. I entered a male dominated sport (Boxing) and struggled to keep on competing after motherhood. I juggled my career with motherhood. Later I overcame the challenge to compete in the Olympics. If I can do it so can anyone,” advised Mary Kom.
