ANVC peace agreement

SHILLONG: The State Government on Monday said that it has done its part on the final peace pact with the ANVC and now Centre has to take a final decision.

“The State Government has done its part on the aspect of truce and now the ball is in the court of the Central Government”, a senior government official said.

However, the official said that the peace pact was placed before various line ministries of the Union Government for their views which gives an indication that an agreement will be arrived at shortly.

He also hoped that the truce would be approved by the Union Cabinet at the earliest.

However, the cause of worry is the emergence of many more insurgent outfits in Garo Hills.

While the splinter outfit ANVC-B is waiting for the approval of the truce along with the parent organization, the situation in Garo Hills on the other hand, is not conducive for peace with kidnapping and extortions becoming the order of the day.

Earlier, only ANVC was the part of the peace pact and later the splinter group ANVC-B also joined the peace process that aims to bring peace back in the disturbed Garo Hills.

However, in the process of pact being finalized, many splinter groups sprang up in Garo Hills. Norrok X Momin who was earlier part of ANVC-B deserted the outfit and formed United Achik Liberation Army (UALA) which is accused of being involved in some violent incidents in Garo Hills and bordering Goalpara.
