SHILLONG: A total of 972 cases out of the 3358 posted cases were settled and disposed of during the one-day national Lok Adalat conducted throughout the State on Monday.

In East Khasi Hills district 250 cases were disposed of out of the 846 posted cases while in Tura 148 cases were disposed off out the 373 cases.

In Jowai, 416 cases inclusive of 65 cases from the District Councils were brought before the Lok Adalat and altogether 65 cases were settled including nine from the District Council Court.

In Nongpoh, 81 cases were settled out of the 257 cases that were brought before the Lok Adalat.

In South West Garo Hills five temporary courts were set up in the DC’s office premises during the Lok Adalat, where about 25 civil cases and an equal number of bank recovery cases were taken up and disposed of.

The Lok Adalat was conducted in the State on Monday instead of Saturday, which was a local holiday on account of Seng Kut Snem.

Various cases including motor accident claims, negotiable instrument cases, family matter, maintenance case and others were posted before the Lok Adalat.

Officer on Special Duty, Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, KJ Lyngdoh while explaining the reason behind less number of cases being disposed of by the Lok Adalat, said that non appearance of the involved parties during the Lok Adalat was the reason behind cause of less number of cases being settled.

Lyngdoh, however, stated that the number of settled cases was higher in comparison to previous Lok Adalats conducted in the State.

The Lok Adalat was conducted in the High Court of Meghalaya, all district courts, all sub divisional courts and all the district council courts.
