Stress on Umroi airport to be made functional

SHILLONG: The Frontier Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday demanded that the Umroi airport should be made fully operational with daily flights so that inconvenience caused to the public is minimized.

The demand came from the Frontier Chamber of Commerce during its short meeting with members of the 14th finance commission here on Wednesday.

The chamber of commerce even asked for hi-tech security in the capital city by installing CCTV cameras and even asked for regular helicopter services from Shillong to Guwahati.

While asking for sufficient funds for higher education of the State, the business community even suggested for early steps to be taken to complete the New Shillong Township project that has received the ire of most of the pressure groups.

The Frontier Chamber of Commerce made the demand for NST after discussing traffic congestion in Shillong.

According to General Secretary of the FCC, the chamber in its meeting with Finance Commission also stressed on the need to create more employment opportunities and recommended that the Government should come up with suitable schemes to develop IT sector and even setup call Centres.

The member of the FCC also demanded sufficient funds for converting Jowai-Silchar road to a four lane road to help the industries development in the region, adding the members also felt that the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road also needs immediate completion.

During the meeting, the Commission assured that they will look into the suggestions and do the needful at an appropriate time.
