New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Thursday said her party, if voted to power in December 4 Assembly polls, will ensure a safe environment for women in Delhi.
“We pledge to wipe away the stigma of being labelled the “Rape capital of India” from Delhi,” Swaraj told reporters.
She was addressing mediapersons during day seven of party’s Dus din-dus irade.
Swaraj said the BJP Government will take several measures to ensure that women in Delhi were free from fear, harassment and exploitation and can become equal partners in India’s growth and progress.
“Nirbhaya incident shocked the conscience of this nation. We must ensure that there can be no more Nirbhayas in Delhi. Strong deterrence and swift punishment are imperative,” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said.
The BJP also announced that if the party was voted to power in Delhi, December 16 will be observed as “Nirbhaya Divas”.
“I am the father of a young woman and I know all the problems that besiege a woman who has grown up in a lawless city. I am aware of the shame of Delhi – that its daughters live in fear day after day. As Chief Minister, I will ensure that our daughters can walk freely with their heads held high,” BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate Dr Harsh Vardhan said.
Dr Harsh Vardhan said he will introduce an education system which instils in the new generation a culture of respect for women.
He said his government will unveil a massive security programme to ensure the streets of Delhi were permanently safe for women.
“One thousand vulnerable spots will be provided extraordinary security through lighting, CCTV, round-the-clock patrols, etc. We will raise a new 25,000-strong Delhi Women’s Protection Force (DWPF). The force will be trained by international experts and equipped with the latest technology,” the BJP leader said.
He said dedicated public transport services will be provided for women in the form of ladies special buses and Metro coaches. All public transport vehicles including buses, autos and taxis will be mandatorily fitted with GPS devices to enable them to be tracked at all times.
Dr Harsh Vardhan said the BJP’s measures will also include compulsory self-defense courses for girls in schools; filing First Information Reports (FIRs) to be made simpler and will be the norm, rather than the exception; hospital and nursing home staff and doctors will be given constant training and re-training in steps to deal with victims of sexual abuse.
