Guwahati: The criminal who had fled with a young girl as a hostage after initially hijacking a school van has been identified and will be nabbed soon, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said here on Friday.
‘We have identified the person and he will be apprehended soon,’ Gogoi told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.
He said police was on trail of the criminal and his arrest is imminent.
Police had maintained that the person was a criminal and not related to any militant outfit.
The reason behind the hijacking and hostage-taking was not clear yet.
The chief minister had on Thursday announced Rs 2 lakh as reward for the young girl for show of exemplary courage.
An eighth standard student, Gunjan Sharma, had offered herself as hostage to a gun-wielding person who had hijacked the school van in which Gunjan was travelling in, along with about eight younger students, at Nazira in Sivsagar district on December 4 last.
She was finally rescued from a tea garden worker’s house last morning after she had walked up to the house from deep forest where her abductor had set her free. (UNI)
