Voted twice as the best slimming centre, VLCC’s Shillong unit has launched a major anti-obesity initiative besides its beauty and regular services

TWO AWARDS for best slimming and beauty centres in four years of operation. There couldn’t have been a better reason for premium wellness brand VLCC to bombard Shillong with a slew of fitness and beauty initiatives.

Topping these is the Orange Dot Initiative, the fight against obesity across 12 countries through the Orange Pledge. This entails motivating people with weight problems to embrace an orange dot – a global mnemonic for anti-obesity – symbolising vivacity and energy.

“Individuals can be responsible for their own well-being only when they have access to a healthy lifestyle. Our aim is to make people aware about the importance of developing wholesome eating habits, implementing a suitable exercise regime, and adopting healthy lifestyle choices. The Orange Pledge is about leading people towards a better quality of life, and the core of our business is to transform lives by making fitness, beauty and health accessible to all sections of society and this initiative brings us a step forward in achieving this vision,” VLCC founder Vandana Luthra said.

Signing up for the Orange Pledge is easy. Once can visit the VLCC centre or log on to www.orangepledge.com.

Obesity refers to body weight that is greater than what is considered healthy for a certain height and is defined as the generalized accumulation of excess fat in the body. Weight is a result of many factors such as lack of healthy dietary pattern and active lifestyle, family history, genetic health problems and metabolism. Some of these factors cannot be changed but lifestyle habits can.

Obesity increases the risk of various ailments which are life threatening along with disrupting the normal daily activities. It increases the risk of getting Coronary Heart Diseases, poor muscle strength, type 2 diabetes, cancer, respiratory problems, stroke, liver problems etc. obesity is the leading cause of death in India.

For Luthra, a World Health Organisation report in March this year was the trigger for the anti-obesity campaign. The study indicated that overweight and obesity are the primary causes for 44 per cent cases of diabetes and 23 per cent cases of heart disease besides 7-41 per cent of certain cases of cancer.

The wellness major has, of course, refreshed its basic business of beauty and fitness through a complete package of care for the body, mind and spirit. “We believe in equipping people with wellness for life, not enhance beauty momentarily. This is because radiant beauty emanates from a fit and healthy body,” an executive said.

“We look at the bigger picture and analyse a person’s requirement before suggesting personalised programmes with free cosmetological, dermatological, nutritional, medical and herbal consultations. So when anyone walks in for a skin/hair concern, our doctor/beauty head and nutritionist/dietician also come into the picture,” the executive added.

Some 2,000 satisfied women and men in Shillong vouch for VLCC’s wellness treatments ranging from specialized programmes to tackle acne, hyper pigmentation, ageing, dandruff, hair loss and damaged hair to general skin and hair care services that help you maintain your gorgeous self. The centre is on a par with 300 other centres in 121 cities across 16 countries that are recognised for their holistic, scientific and natural weight-management practices and therapeutic beauty solutions.

“It’s been an inspiration, motivating and healthy experience,” said M Passah, impressed by the detailed and systematic records the centre kept of his progress during his weight-control programme. Homemaker P Kharkongor has also had a ‘great’ five-month experience undergoing a skin treatment programme. “From herbal, ayurvedic, aromatherapy and talassotherapy to the latest (bio-technological) cosmeceutical and nature tec therapies, the treatment under professional dermatologists combined science and nature,” she said.

Others have had hair care and hair treatment solutions including styling, colouring, permanent waving, straightening, hair-loss, dandruff and dry or damaged hair. The Shillong centre has also scored in regular beauty services such as clean-up with exfoliation or Italian Rica wax to flaunt flawless skin. No wonder, it has been chosen the best fitness and beauty centre for two out of four years of being around.

But, as Luthra says, checking obesity is half the battle won for a ‘beautiful you’.
