SHILLONG: It’s two in Meghalaya, but four in Rajasthan for the Purno Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP).
While the NPP has only two legislators in party supremo Sangma’s home state, it has secured four seats in the Rajasthan Assembly polls results of which were announced on Sunday.
Though small in number in the 199-seat Assembly, for Sangma, victory in four seats is a good beginning for the party.
“We are happy that we made a good beginning in just nine months of the formation of the party,” Sangma said over phone from Delhi on Sunday.
The NPP is supporting the BJP-led NDA at the Centre, but the party has decided to sit in the Opposition in Rajasthan.
“The local situation in Rajasthan is different from the national scenario, so we have decided to sit in the Opposition,” Sangma said. He gave credit to party leader Kirorilal Meena in Rajasthan for the victory of the candidates.
Signs for 2014: Sangma, who had earlier extended support to the NDA at the Centre, said that the alliance led by BJP will come back to power in 2014 during Lok Sabha polls considering the good show put up by the party.
“Definitely, these elections are signals to what is in store in 2014,” the NPP chief said.
Asked whether change in national politics will bring any change in Meghalaya politics, Sangma said, “No comments; let the year 2014 come.”
