NONGSTOIN: Nongstoin Police on Saturday arrested two HANM West Khasi Hills District members in connection with arson-related cases in Nongstoin.

The arrested persons have been identified as Wilstone Sohshang, vice president of HANM West Khasi Hills Unit and Kynsaibor Kharbani, sports secretary of the district unit.

Speaking to pressmen, West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said that on learning of the presence of the HANM leaders in Nongstoin, a police team led by the Addl. Superintendent of Police conducted checking of vehicles in Nongstoin area and apprehended the duo at around 8 PM on Saturday.

Nongtnger stated that with the arrest of the two HANM members and the earlier arrest of Liver Paul Kharbani, chief organising secretary, the backbone of HANM in West Khasi Hills ‘has been broken’.

The arrests were made in connection with the arson cases related to torching of the PWD EE Office, the Meghalaya Khadi and Village Industries Board Office, Fisheries Office and the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Office in Nongstoin on September 22, 2013.

The district police chief also said despite the arrest of three HANM members, efforts were being made to book all those responsible in the arson cases.

It may be mentioned that the PWD and the Khadi offices were completely torched while the Fisheries Office and the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Office were partially burnt in the arson cases.
