First ever ‘street dance’competition in city

SHILLONG: The city on Saturday witnessed the first of its kind dance competition where the youth battled it out in two dance forms-B-boying and popping.

The event, which aimed to serve as a platform for exchange of culture and knowledge for the b-boys and b-girls from across the country, was organized by Anis Fitness Club and the competition was entitled ‘Home Town Love’.

B-boying, also called breakdancing, is a style of street dance that originated among Black and Puerto Rican youths in New York City during the early 1970s while Popping is a street dance and one of the original funk styles that came from California round about the same time.

Speaking to media persons, a member of the Anis Fitness Club, Dizy said, “Through the event we want to contribute to peace and harmony in the state, where bandhs have become the order of the day. Events such as these unite people besides providing a platform for local youths to showcase their talent.”

Participants from Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi and also from other parts of the North East took part in the competition.The competition was organised in three categories– B-boying, popping and crew dance (three members). 17 participants from different parts of the country battled it out in popping category while 16 challengers sweated it out in B-boying. Four teams participated in the crew dance category.

Bboy Kima emerged winner in the B-boying category while Richmond Paswett was the best when it came to popping. ‘Wannabe Army’ was awarded as the best crew dance side. All the winners were awarded cash prizes.
