Alleged human trafficking case

SHILLONG: The fate of twenty girls who were allegedly trafficked from Meghalaya and taken to Tamil Nadu in May this year is still unknown.
Altogether twenty minor girls in the age group of 8-14 years were trafficked to Hosur in Tamil Nadu. However, they were rescued by Child Welfare Committee of Tamil Nadu.
As per media reports, the girls from Meghalaya were brought to Nivedhitha Seva Trust under the aegis of Seva Bharathi in May last, and were being provided free boarding, lodging and education. However, the NGO had taken the girls from Meghalaya without obtaining any letter of authority from the State Government.
The NGO had also failed to get registered under Section 34 of the Juvenile Justice Act, sources informed.
After the matter came to light, a local court had ordered for the girls to be sent back to Meghalaya, but the court order was not complied with. Latest reports have indicated that the girls are currently sheltered somewhere in Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, CSWO on Monday sought the intervention of the anti human trafficking unit of Meghalaya police to bring back the 20 girls from Tamil Nadu.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing has submitted a memorandum to the Nodal Officer of the anti human trafficking unit in this regard.
