Two dead in road mishap

NONGSTOIN: Two people died on the spot while twenty-three others sustained injuries when a truck (AS-13C-0656) on its way to Wahthre Coal quarry in Shallang, West Khasi Hills, fell into a deep gorge at Wahrondu, about 3 km from Shallang.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm on Wednesday.
The bodies of the deceased, which are yet to be identified, have been kept at Shallang Police Station. Police sources informed that the deceased and the injured persons were non-tribal labourers.
Some of the injured were shifted to Goalpara in Assam, while those who sustained minor injuries were admitted at Shallang PHC.
Police have begun investigation in the case and efforts were on to trace the missing driver, who fled from the scene after the incident.
Police suspect drunk driving as the reason behind the accident.
