TURA: A six-member team of GNLA militants who were allegedly scouting the Tura-Williamnagar road for subversive activities narrowly escaped a police attack in which their hideout was destroyed on Friday afternoon.
Police commandos from Tura raided Chiwategre village under Rongram police outpost following intelligence reports about movement of a group of armed militants in the area who were reportedly planning a subversive operation.
The police team came across the militants at their hideout in a thickly-forested area  outside of Chiwategre village at around 3:30 pm.
“The militants opened fire on our team as soon as they were spotted and our boys returned fire,” informed West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kr Singh to The Shillong Times.
There were no casualties on either side and the ultras melted away into the jungle.
The place of incident is approximately 15 km from Rongram police outpost and located on the Tura-Williamnagar road.
According to police, the militants were led by senior GNLA cadre identified as Pangkam and had been holed up in the area for the past few days with an intention to undertake an operation againsy an unknown target.
While search operations continue in the area police teams have destroyed the temporary camp of the militants.
