SHILLONG: The Lumshyiap Dorbar Shnong has completed 25 years of its existence ever since it was carved out from Pynthorumkhrah Dorbar Shnong way back in 1987.
The silver jubilee celebration of the locality was inaugurated by local MLA AL Hek who is also the Health and Family Welfare Minister on Saturday.
The silver jubilee celebrations would conclude on December 30.
Looking back, the locality has a very small population during its initial years. But in the past many years, the locality has seen growth in the number of families residing the locality.
Despite being surrounded by localities like Pynthorumkhrah which has a large number of non-tribal populations, the locality has not allowed that people from outside other than the local indigenous tribes resides in the locality.
The people who has come to reside in the locality hails from various areas of Shillong like Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Malki, Wahingdoh among others.
Delivering a keynote address at the inaugural function of the silver jubilee celebrations, Lumshyiap Rangbah Shnong P Khongdup that the locality has been able to retain its unique identity thanks to far sightedness of the past leaders.
“Despite being under tremendous pressure, the past leaders realized the importance that the locality should be dominated by only the local indigenous population,” Khongdup said.
At this hour when there is a demand for a mechanism to check the problem of influx, he said that the locality has been to put its own internal mechanism to prevent any doubtful people to enter and resides in the locality.
“We managed to check the entrance of any doubtful people because of the cooperation of the house owners and the residents of the locality,” Khongdup said.
The Rangbah Shnong also lauded the contribution of the Seng Kynthei and Seng Samla towards the growth and progress of the locality even as ensuring that there is peace and tranquility in the locality.
“The authorities have also tagged Lumshyiap to be amongst the peaceful localities in Shillong,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hek during his speech lauded the Lumshyiap Dorbar Shnong on completing its 25 years of existence in the service of its own people and also for its ability to maintain peace and harmony in the locality.
The local MLA also gives his words of encouragement to the members of the local Dorbar Shnong Executive Committee to continue their good service for the overall interest of the people of the locality.
The first Rangbah Shnong of the locality was Leejones Roy Paswet while Living Stone Jyrwa was its first general secretary of the Dorbar Shnong Executive Committee.
