Centre’s no to postage stamp on U Soso Tham

New Delhi: The Centre has declined to issue commemorative postage stamp in honour of renowned Khasi poet U Soso Tham despite requests from several quarters including former Union Minister Vincent H Pala without assigning any reason.
A proposal for issuing postage stamp in the name of U Soso Tham,  the greatest icon in the literary history of Meghalaya, was placed before the Philatelic Advisory Committee (PAC) which considers such cases.
But the same failed the get the necessary approval.
Pala, meanwhile, urged the PAC to reconsider its decision. He also demanded if the same is not considered the reasons should be made known to him in writing.
The Government has received as many as 82 names of prominent persons from different walks of life. Out of this only 21 cases were selected for issuing commemorative stamps this year including those of Swami Vivekananda, Sai Baba and Sachin Tendulkar.
Of the 21 names none were considered from Northeastern region. Only the case of former Assam Chief Minister Late Sarat Chandra Sinha will be taken up later, an official note said.
A commemorative stamp in the name of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu will be released next year, the note said.
