13 others injured as truck hits a group of Christian faithful

JOWAI: A 22-year-old village defence party youth (VDP) member Samwan Sana was killed while 13 others were injured, two of them critically, when a truck hit a group of Christian faithful on their way from Tuber to Shohshrieh on Wednesday.
The faithful were singing carols in course of their 2 km march organized by the Tuberkmai Shnong Presbyterian Church when an inebriated trucker, Kloi Pyrtuh, dashed the vehicle striking the pedestrians at around 7 pm.
Police arrested the driver and seized the truck.
The injured VDP member died on the way to Shillong. Two other critically injured VDP members, Ioolang Sana (20) and Nyngkong Phawa (20), were admitted to Jowai Civil Hospital. Phawa was later referred to Woodland Hospital, Shillong.
The deceased and the injured VDP members were assisting in controlling the traffic.Police confirmed that the driver was in an inebriated condition. Sources also informed that the same truck nearly hit a group of people at Ialong village.
