M’laya records steep rise in crimes in 2013

SHILLONG: The State of Meghalaya which is considered as one of the peaceful states of the North East region has witnessed a whopping increase in the number of crimes with around 2341 cognizable crimes registered under IPC till September this year.
As per the police statistics, there were 132 cases of murders in the State while there were as many as 151 cases of rape being reported from the State from January till September 2013.
Altogether 106 cases of abduction was reported while 468 cases of theft  and 128 cases of burglary were registered. There were also 54 cases of dacoity and 103 cases of cheating.
In addition, seven cases were also reported for forgery of passport and as many as 1007 cases were also reported for other IPC cases.
The crime against women in the State continued to rise as altogether 250 crime were reported in the State in nine months till September including 151 cases of total rape and 4 cases of gang rape. Cases of molestation have also seen a rise since 49 cases being reported in the matrilineal Meghalaya till September. Four cases of immoral trafficking was also reported and there was one case of custodial rape.
The most number of cognizable crime under IPC was reported from the most advanced East Khasi Hills which counts to 864 cases followed by Ri Bhoi district where 257 cases were reported in nine months of 2013.
