‘Need to revive traditional culture and practices’

SHILLONG:  Deputy Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Sanbor Shullai has stressed on the need to revive the traditional culture and practices of indigenous people of the State.
“In this era of modernization, people have forgotten the traditional culture and practices. This is not a healthy trend,” Shullai said while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Laban Week organised by Seng Samla Laban at Madan Laban here on Saturday.
In his message to the people, the Deputy Speaker emphasized that there was a need to stress on the importance to acknowledge culture and traditions.
He also felt that the various traditional dances of the Khasis and others traditional activities including community feasts should be revived.
“The younger generations need to take pride in preserving their culture. This is the only way we will be to revive our rich cultural traditions,” he said.
He also appeal to the Seng Samla to conduct an enrollment drive to ensure more youth join as members which will develop a spirit of unity and community participation.
Stating that strengthening of the local women’s organization is also equally important, the deputy speaker said, “The three organizations including Dorbar Shnong, women organization and youth organization are the three pillars that strengthen the society and all need to work together.”
The Laban week which started since December 7, saw the participation from local youths in the different competitions including outdoor and indoor sports activities, singing, dancing and others.
Later, Shullai also distributed the prices to the winners of the various competitions.
