Speaker for suitable site for new Assembly building

SHILLONG:  The State Assembly Speaker AT Mondal has written to Government to allot land for the construction of a new Assembly building.
Mondal said on Sunday that he had written to the Government on the urgent need to allot land so that the construction of a Assembly building could be started.
The frequent change of sites has delayed the construction of a new Assembly for almost 13 years after the old Assembly was gutted by fire in January, 2001.
While  20 acres of land are needed for the Assembly chamber and administrative building, more land would be required for the construction of  hostel for legislators and quarters among others.
Though the target of the Assembly Secretariat is the land at Mawdiangdiang, any suitable site would be desirable, according to Mondal.
It was in April this year that the Assembly passed a resolution entrusting the High Power Committee to explore possibilities of constructing the new Assembly at the earliest.
During the meeting with 14th finance commission in November, funds were sought for the construction of the new Assembly building.
In the past, preparations for constructing the Assembly building were carried out at least in four sites, which include the old Assembly premises at Police Bazar, Mawdiangdiang, Upper Shillong and Tara Ghar.
