Naxal wanted in scribe’s killing nabbed in C’garh
Raipur: A Naxal allegedly involved in the killing of a journalist earlier this year was arrested from Maoist-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, police said ton Tuesday. Banjami Hidma (35) was nabbed from the forest under Tongpal police station limits yesterday during a search operation, Sukma Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shandilya said. “The cadre was wanted in connection with the murder of a local journalist – Nemi Chand Jain(45) – and a cash reward of Rs 50,000 was also announced for information regarding him,” the SP said. Acting on a tip-off about his presence in Tongpal of South Bastar, around 450 kms from the state capital Raipur, a team of local police mobilised and later nabbed him, he said. The interrogation of the rebel was on, he added. According to sources, police also suspect Hidma’s involvement in the May 25 Jiram valley Naxal attack in which prominent Congress leaders were killed. Robbers loot house of UP Home secretary’s sister
Agra: Robbers barged into the house of sister of Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary and looted at gunpoint jewellery worth Rs 2 lakhs and cash amounting to Rs 3 lakhs in Sarlabagh area here. Six men entered the house of Shashikala Goyal, sister of Principal Secretary for Home Anil Gupta, when she opened the main gate early Monday morning and held her hostage at gunpoint, police said on Tuesday. Hearing the commotion, her husband Sudhir Goyal, retired chief engineer of the railways, came to the room and the armed robbers held both of them hostage at gunpoint, police said. After taking the keys of the lockers, the robbers decamped with jewellery and cash in the couple’s Wagon R car, which was later found abandoned in Dayal Bagh area. SSP Shalab Mathur said police teams had been formed to nab the robbers. (PTI)
Three-year RI for bank manager, engineer in bribery case
Bhopal: A bank manager was sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case by a special CBI court here. Punjab National Bank (PNB) Manager S C Nanda, who was arrested while accepting a bribe in 2007, was also slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000 by the court on Monday, a CBI release said here on Tuesday. Nanda had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for accepting a loan proposal under the Prime Minister Rojgar Yojna (PMRY) scheme. In another bribery case, the special CBI court sentenced a section engineer of the Western Central Railway to three years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. The engineer, Yogendra Pandey had in 2007 demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the complainant for facilitating her transfer from Nagpur division to Jabalpur. (PTI)
Husband beats wife to death
Bijnor: A woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband after she opposed his drinking habits, police said here on Tuesday. The incident happened last night at Rasidpur Garhi village when Mukhesh hit his wife Pooja repeatedly with a bed post, they said, adding that they frequently used to fight over Mukhesh’s alcoholism. A case has been registered against Mukhesh, they said adding that Pooja’s body has been sent for postmortem. The couple got married seven months back, police said. (PTI)
