Assam Rifles nabs 2 with arms and cash in Nagaland

Kohima: Based on specific information regarding extortion and transshipment of weapons by underground cadres, troops of 37 Assam Rifles established a mobile check post at Chumukedima under Dimapur district recently and apprehended two individuals with extorted money worth Rs. 1,50,585. According to a press release issued by the PRO of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) today the arrested persons claimed to be SS Lt Imtisanen Waling (35) of NSCN (IM), resident of Mon District and Syed Safi Ahmed (26) an Over Ground Worker of NSCN, resident of Golaghat (Assam). The apprehended Individuals along with recoveries were later handed over to Diphupar Police Station of Dimapur town. In another incident, in coordination with Nagaland Police, a Mobile Check Post of 37 Assam Rifles apprehended Samuel Marak (36), resident of Dhansiripar at Kukidolong. The individual was involved in abduction of a truck driver in Dimapur and was being tracked by Nagaland Police, which lead to his apprehension. The individual was handed over in situ to Nagaland Police after apprehension. (UNI)

Nagaland has prospect for rubber cultivation

Kohima: Nagaland has excellent prospect for cultivation of rubber in view of the high global demand for natural rubber. The whole of North East, including Nagaland, has huge potential as traditional rubber growing areas. According to the annual administrative report of the Department of Land Resources, other advantages include, favourable agro-climatic factors, high yield and superior quality of latex, acceptability and high demand for rubber cultivation, viable alternative to jhuming (cultivation on hill slopes), vast areas suitable for rubber, generation of gainful income and employment opportunities. The department also added that it would contribute significantly to the state’s GDP. Under the department’s initiative, about 9000 hectares have so far been developed in Nagaland with funds pooled from the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) and negotiated loans under the state plan. During 2012-13, with the fund provided by NABARD under RIDF-XI, an area of 750 hectares has been brought under plantation at a cost of Rs. 400 lakhs in Mokokchung, Wokha, Dimapur, Longleng, Mon and Peren districts. Nagaland Chief Minister meets Gogoi

Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio held discussion with his Assam counterpart Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Jorhat in Assam on Tuesday evening on the violence over the Rengma Nagas in Karbi Anglong district of Assam. According to officials here on Thursday, both the Chief Ministers discussed on the present situation of Karbi Anglong district and steps being taken to maintain law and order. Sources said Gogoi told Nagaland Chief Minister that all steps are being taken to ensure safety of people including Rengma Naga community residing in Karbi Anglong. Rio requested Gogoi to deploy more security forces for the safety of the Rengma Naga people residing there on their ancestors land and expressed satisfaction on the steps being taken by the Assam Government.
