‘Ri Bhoi Police arresting our members on false charges’

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union, North Khasi Hills Unit, has registered its strong condemnation of the State Police for continuing to hunt and arrest their members by framing various false charges against them without having any substantial evidence to prove their involvement in any case of arson or violence in the past months.
“We are surprised that police have taken these extreme steps even though the pressure groups have already postponed their agitations on the issue of Inner Line Permit. We were not expecting such a thing to take place especially when Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma had hinted that there would be no more arrest while inviting the pressure groups for dialogue on the issue of influx,” KSU North Khasi Hills president F Kharkamni said in a statement issued here on Monday.
Kharkamni informed that the Ri-Bhoi Police had raided the house of one of its leaders in Ri-Bhoi district, H Wahlang, at Killing on Saturday night and arrested him.
“We would not tolerate this attitude of the police towards our members. We would also not like the police to make our members the scapegoat by framing false charges without having any evidence against them,” Kharkamni said.
