Aizawl: Four children are among the 22 bravehearts selected by Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) to be rewarded the National Bravery Award this year.
Of the four brave kids, 13-year-old Malsawmtluangi, daughter of Lalduhawmi, of Lengte village in western Mizoram’s Mamit district will be awarded posthumously.
Malsawmtluangi lost her life while trying to save her younger brother and one other friend from drowning on June 9, 2013. Malsawmtluangi and her friend Hani Ngurdinthari (15) of the same village, who is also among the four awardees, managed to pull out Malsawmtluangi’s younger brother Vanrosanga from the swelling river while they could not save the life of the other, a 13-year-old girl.
Hani Ngurdinthari saved the life of the boy after she gave him artificial respiration just as she learnt from school.
On earlier occasions, Hani Ngurdinthari had saved the life of three of her friends from drowning in a river.
Remlalhruaitluangi, a 10-year-old girl of Hruaikawn village in eastern Mizoram’s Champhai district, will be honoured with the bravery award for saving her friend from drowning in Tiau river, that divides India and Myanmar, on April 12, 2013.
Vanlalhruaia, an 11-year-old boy of Mamit, will be given the bravery award for saving his friend, also from drowning in a river, on May 4, 2013.
Though Vanlalhruaia did not know how to swim, he dived into the river to save the little girl. After he pulled her onto the shore, he went to the town and sought help from the locals.
Though the Mizoram state council for child welfare suggested six children for the award this year, the Indian council for child welfare selected the four children.
With these, 26 children from Mizoram have received the coveted award since its inception in 1957, nine of them posthumously. (UNI)
