Govt keeps Tenancy Bill committee on hold

SHILLONG: The State Government has kept on hold the ministerial-level committee on Tenancy Bill headed by Prestone Tynsong.

Tynsong told reporters recently that in view of the proposed talks with the pro-ILP pressure groups to be held on Wednesday, the committee was kept on hold.

He also said that the Government has an open mind to engage in dialogue with the pressure groups to address the issue of influx.

While Tynsong was the Chairman of the Ministerial Committee which was formed to deliberate on the draft Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill , other members were Power Minister Clement R Marak, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, Government Chief Whip Ronnie V Lyngdoh, Parliamentary Secretaries Kennedy Khyriem, Justine Dkhar and Cherak W Momin.

The task of the Committee was to hold consultations in all the 11 districts of the State and the respective deputy commissioners had been asked to notify the dates for holding the consultations. However, during the first meeting of the Committee held on November 20 in Shillong, there was protest from the college students who attended the meet. The students also tore the copies of the proposed Tenancy Bill and walked out of the meeting .
