Parents of DU assistant professor gets Rs 37.64 L compensation
New Delhi: Family members of an assistant professor in Delhi University, who died in a road accident last year, have been awarded a compensation of over Rs 37 lakh by a motor accident claims tribunal (MACT) here. MACT directed the SBI General Insurance Company, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay a compensation of Rs 37,64,538 to the parents of 26-year-old Karamveer, who died in the accident after his motorcycle was hit by a rashly driven vehicle here on June 8 last year. The tribunal awarded the compensation while relying on the “unrebutted testimony” of the parents of the deceased and also the documents placed on record. “In view of the unrebutted testimony of the petitioners (parents) and documents available on record, it is prima facie proved that Karamveer died due to injuries suffered in the road accident caused due to rash and negligent driving of respondent number one (driver of the offending vehicle),” MACT’s Presiding Officer Dinesh Bhatt said. The order came on a petition filed by the parents of the deceased seeking compensation on the ground that Karamveer, an assistant professor on ad-hoc basis at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College here, had died due to the rash and negligent driving of the driver of the offending vehicle. They told the tribunal that Karamveer was crushed to death after his motorcycle was hit from behind by the vehicle on Ring Road near Kashmere Gate here. Karamveer was also called for an interview for the post of lecturer in Rajasthan Public Service Commission besides receiving letters for selection as trainee scientist by the UGC. (PTI)

Bengal gang rape victim’s parents seek justice in Bihar
Patna: The parents of the 16-year-old girl who was gang raped and set ablaze in West Bengal arrived in the Bihar capital in the hope of getting justice in their home state. Officials said they would meet Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday. “We hope to get justice at least in my own state, Bihar, if not in West Bengal,” the victim’s father, a taxi driver, told reporters here. The family hails from Bihar’s Samastipur, and had migrated to Madhyamgram in West Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district in search of livelihood, he said. “We have come here for justice, this is my soil,” he said. He said he hoped the Bihar government would take the case seriously and provide justice to his dead daughter. The victim’s mother, in a choked voice, said it was ironical that her daughter failed to get justice in West Bengal though a woman was the chief minister of the state. Nitish Kumar had earlier announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs.1 lakh for the girl’s family, and deputed senior Bihar Police officer G.S. Gangwar to meet her parents in Kolkata. The girl was allegedly raped twice by a gang in October last year and set on fire Dec 23. She died of injuries Dec 31. Her father has also approached the Calcutta High Court, demanding that the matter be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation. (IANS)
