LR Sangma appointed as MPSC chief

SHILLONG: Retired IAS officer Lutherine R Sangma has been appointed as Chairperson of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) with effect from January 14.

Sangma who was holding the post of Commissioner Secretary in charge of Education and Director of Food and Civil Supplies, had gone on voluntary retirement recently.

The MPSC Chairperson’s post had been lying vacant for over a year following the retirement of former IAS officer Ashok Kumar Tigidi in December, 2012.

The State Government had constituted a search committee under State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat for appointment of the MPSC Chairman.

The Government had delayed the appointment of the new Chairman since it wanted to appoint the members of the Commission first.

It is worth mentioning that the Judicial Inquiry Commission constituted to probe the death of nine persons in Tura and Williamnagar in police firing on September 30, 2005, in its report had held LR Sangma, who was the then West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, responsible for first giving permission to the Garo Students’ Union to hold a public rally and later revoking it.
